The Modern Architectural City Tour
Till not even 10 years ago, the old port of Amsterdam behind the Central Station was a no man’s land, domain of dopers and junkies squatting the huge depots and remains of the once so successful United East Indian Company (VOC). Now, anno 2015 this area is best known for its diverse offer. Take for example the New Concert hall (Muziekgebouw aan‘t IJ) or the recently restored depots, still dated from the eighteenth century that are now turned into lofts, studios and theatres. The eastern harbour offers a wide range of modern and old architecture that are blend into one new city area. This area is considered as a perfect example of how modern city building makes the unique combination of residential and labour ambience possible in a modern, medieval city at the water.
